Apple iMac G3 Tray Loader

The iMac was a revolutionary piece of computer manufacturing, both in terms of its design and the market it was aimed for. In a daring move, Apple abandoned the floppy drive for the iMac - the thinking being that it was a designed as an internet machine, and small files could be emailed. Apple also embraced the then-new USB connectivity.

It marked Apple's decision to move away from the standard beige box model for its computers to the much more attractive design that they are now famous for.

The iMac was specifically aimed at the average user, lacking the raw power and expandability of a PowerMac, it makes up for it in its portability and ease of use and installation.

It is an all in one system, containing a monitor, keyboard, speakers and modem - the user simply plugs in a USB keyboard and mouse and it is ready to go.

The tray loading iMac (named for the tray on its CD-ROM drive) came out in four revisions (A to D) with increasing processor speed and a slight improvement in other specs. The tray loading iMac was subsequently replaced by the slot loading iMac.
